IREM
By: Bubblun
IREM was not a major publisher of
NES games, but their games typically remained true to the company's main
strength of shooters. Their releases include:
Image Fight
Kickle Cubicle
Metal Storm
Sqoon
Notables: Of these four
games, Kickle Cubicle is by far the best. Its action/puzzle elements and boss
fights are fun from beginning to end. Since IREM excels in making
shooters, I was disappointed by both Image Fight and Metal Storm and thought
they were both too generic and difficult. Sqoon is more fun and has a
unique concept of a lighthearted submarine shooter game. It was a pretty
early NES release and the graphics may not be up to your standards. It
also features a hilarious story in the manual.
Status: For the most part,
IREM seems to be dead or dying rapidly. Their only real hit is the R-Type
series of shooters that has graced many consoles, most recently the
PlayStation. They website was last updated in Summer 2000 and they don't
appear to have any new releases planned.
Best Titles: Definitely get
Kickle Cubicle, you won't regret it. Sqoon is worth it for some fun and
its rarity.
Popularity of Games: Below
average.
Rarity of Games: Above
average, all are about equally rare.
