American Sammy

By: Bubblun

Certainly not a major force in NES development or sales, Sammy released the following games:

Amagon

Arkista's Ring

Michael Andretti World GP

Might & Magic

Ninja Crusaders

Silk Worm

Thundercade

Twin Cobra

Ultimate Basketball

Vice Project Doom

Notables: American Sammy was a total underdog developer, and none of these titles were big sellers. They brought the PC hit Might & Magic to the NES, but I don't find it very enjoyable. Perhaps their most creative game is Arkista's Ring, which is an action/puzzle/rpg title that must be experienced.  Vice Project Doom is also a worthwhile purchase.

Status: Somehow, American Sammy is still in business, although I wouldn't doubt that it's run by two Japanese college exchange students working from their dorm room.  A run through their website pretty much proves they have no notable recent releases. However, the 2D fighting game Guilty Gear X was just released in Japan for Sega Dreamcast by Sammy to great praise.  It remains to be seen if American Sammy will pick it up for U.S. release but if so it could be the big hit they desperately need.

Best Titles: Pretty easy to choose here, Arkista's Ring and Vice Project Doom are about the only ones that stand out.

Popularity of Games: Below average

Rarity of Games: Above average, you probably won't find Might & Magic cheap or easily.

Overall Rating: C-

Website: http://www.sammyusa.com It should be noted that this is a MUST-VISIT website. Tons of terrible English and humorous quotes are to be found. Be sure to even check out their Game Tips section, where you can still find help on some of their NES titles.

Current Slogan: "What does Sammy USA do? GAMES!!!"
